To Retire or Not To Retire

Three weeks into the NFL season and there are many teams struggling who we thought would be coasting to victories and teams who are 3-0 who we ignored when NFL contenders were brought up. The San Diego Chargers, playoff contenders last year, boasting last years MVP and the most talented athelete in the league, and argueably the most talented linebacker in the in Shawne Merriman; are a dissapointing 1-2. This last week they lost to the Green Bay packers who have a rejuvinated 37 year old quarterback (wink wink) who we all thought should have retired after a disappointing 06-07 season. The aging Brett Favre has been asked to play a different role on his team. Instead of leading them to Super Bowls like he has done in the past, he has been asked to "manage the game", in others just don't screw up. His team has started out 3-0 and just put a whoopin on the before mentioned Chargers. Brett Favre threw for 3 touchdowns and 369 total yards to eight different recievers. He picked apart the San Diego defense and propelled the Packers to a 31-24 convincing victory. Favre showed that he cannot only manage the team, but be the strength of the team. He is a seasoned Championship quarterback who has one of the youngest teams in the NFL. If he can come along side his players and continue to make them look better and be better, their confidence on the field will grow, and when that happens... look out for the Packers. Brett Favre will probably retire after this year, and I wish him the best as he will go down as one of the best quarterbacks of all time, passing Dan Marino this week as #1 on the all time touchdowns pass list.

Speaking of retirement, Barry Bonds name has come up yet again. The Giants reportedly aren't going to re-sign the "home-run king". Rumors are swirling as to where he will go. "If" he comes back and plays he should play in the American League as a DH because we all know he has lost a step or two, or three, or eight in the outfield. With his knee problems and ego issues the best place for him would be with a middle of the road AL team. The playoff contenders like the Angels won't want him because of all the negative press that will follow, but the Rangers or the team across the Bay in Oakland (the A's) might take the slugger in hopes of bolstering their seemingly weak lineups. My vote though is for retirement. He has the record, he has the press, and he has no respect. So quit already! The sooner he does the sooner his name will no longer be the topic in sports and the sooner we can try to forget about him, just like we did with Mark McGuire. He won't even have the record for very long because A-Rod is on pace for what seems like 800 home runs barring injury (knock on wood). Leave, Barry. Give the American people their game back and give Balco their final payment.

I'm Out...
